Review: Metalcrypt (5+/5)

On one level “The Black Halo” is no surprise at all, as it is the logical continuation of the sound Kamelot evolved into from “The Fourth Legacy” through the stunning “Epica”. But on another level, their eighth full-length album is a complete surprise, because I didn’t think they could pull this off. When a band comes out with an album as good as “Epica”, you expect them to miss the mark at some point, you expect the follow-up to be a step back from greatness. But the truth is that ever since Roy Khan joined the band they have been getting consistently better, and this latest album is no exception.

Yes, this is a sequel to “Epica” in every sense of the term – both conceptual and compositional. The dark, introspective treatment of the Faust theme is carried into even deeper territory, and the style of the music is intact, yet raises the bar on complexity yet again. Kamelot keep adding layers and subtlety to their sound, without slipping into genuine prog territory, or losing focus. In the hands of less sure songwriters a sound this rich would become an overloaded mess, but from the first song you can relax, comfortable that you are in the hands of songwriters who know exactly what they are about and are not settling for ‘good enough’. The guys have, over the last 4 albums, grown beyond the confines of Power Metal and into their own sound that is as unique as it is distinctive. Lots of bands pile on the orchestrations and synth effects, but very few bands approach their songwriting like genuine composers, and what I love about Kamelot is their complete respect for both their music and their audience. They write serious music and they take it seriously, they never dumb down what they are doing to make it easier to get. I love they way their music insists upon being taken on its own terms, and relies on nothing else. Kamelot works are self-contained and self-sustaining.

The album opens wide with the magnificent, pounding “March Of Mephisto”, which shows off both the intricate layering of sound they engaged in for this recording, as well as the darker, heavier riffs the songs are built on. By going for more aggressive, direct riffing as well as more complex melodic and vocal constructs, they managed to be both more detailed and more accessible at the same time. As on “Epica” the first three songs serve as a kind of opening suite and come together strongly. One thing I really like about “The Black Halo” is that the ‘interlude’ pieces are shorter and are kept very low-key, placed just so to let the album breathe a little, rather than slow it down. Also, for those who pay close attention, there are melodic reprises from “Epica” scattered throughout, some overt, some very subtle. “Moonlight” is a killer song, as is the title track, and the stunning closer “Serenade”. But really you can’t pick out tracks here, as the whole album is integral, and demands to be considered as a complete entity. Very rarely does an album finish out and seem completely finished, and no further elaboration is needed or possible. Much, much more than a CD full of songs, “The Black Halo” is a complete album.

And the performances! First of all the production is nothing short of jaw-dropping. I don’t know if I have ever heard a band sound this good. How they added so much depth to the sound without losing any details in the mix is a marvel. Every little instrumental bit, every note is there to be heard, yet nothing overwhelms. Thomas Youngblood gets my nomination as one of the greatest guitar players ever, simply because he never lets his ability get in the way of the songs. His innovative riffs and understated leadwork never call undue attention to themselves, and his kind of restraint is almost unheard of in a guitarist. Casey Grillo’s drumming is once again eye-popping in its deceptive metrical complexity. And Roy Khan, my Gods, what a voice. He sounds better every time I hear him. His charisma, his tone, his phrasing – he is technically one of the best two or three singers out there, and yet he has such feeling and emotion, almost like an actor rather than a simple vocal performer.

To say something like ‘Kamelot have done it again’ would be a disservice to this band, and to the album they have created. In a sense this is classic Kamelot, but really they have done nothing quite like this before. “The Black Halo” is everything I hoped for and more than I thought I would get. Kamelot have taken their sound to dizzying heights, and I remain in awe, waiting only to see if they can and will take it higher yet. I think they will. I’m calling this the album of the year, and I don’t think I’ll have to eat those words, I really don’t.

Raw passion, dedication, hopes and dreams; this is what fuels the
musical creation of five guys. Resistant to the black vortex that
creates misery and dampens dreams, Versus The Nothing is a band
whose imagination and musical talent has rocketed them into the
recording of their Debut album, ” Let It All Come Down”.

Humble beginnings and experimenting in the basement of a house has
transformed into musical passion and commitment. Jason and Ross,
two of the original members harnessed the energy from their
teenage years and blended their abilities with the talents of
three others: Chris Shaw, Derek Merrell and Jake Wyman.

Locals gigs under the band name Elixir at Stardust Roller Rink’s
Battle of the Bands and The Endoplasmic got their name out there.

It gave them a taste of what it was like to perform for a live
crowd. In 2005 they played the Supernova Battle of the Bands at
the Croatian Cultural Centre and snagged the attention of Chris
Shaw and Derek Merrell, who quickly became an integral part of the
band.

Late 2005 saw the recording of Elixir’s first album, So This Is
Life, and the introduction of Jake Wyman as drummer.

With a fused membership and a shared vision, the band headed
upwards, landing in the top 10 finalists of 99.3 Fox Seeds
(cfox.com) contest in 2005 and in the top 20 of over a thousand
entries in 2006.

In the Spring of 2007 they were repeatedly invited and
enthusiastically received at The Roxy, Richards on Richards, and
the Plaza Club.

August 2007 saw the band’s first Western Canadian tour, as they
pumped energy and rock into the hearts of close to 500 people at
venues in Vancouver, Kamloops, Calgary, Red Deer and finally
Edmonton, where they had been selected from over 1,200 bands to
co-headline with three other bands at the North American Diesel
Performance Drag Races.

The end of 2007 saw a need to change their name from Elixir to
Versus The Nothing, as they sat down to collaborate and
passionately record their second album.

The soulful, melodic sounds of Ross’ voice, combined with the
emphatic balance of bass, guitar and drums appeal to a diverse
audience, although at heart the boys love to fill a room with
pulsating hard rock.

Review: Metal-Observer (8/10)

I’ve always liked CHILDREN OF BODOM, just never really liked them. You know, I listen to them occasionally and eventually buy each new album, but I’ve never considered them amongst my favorites. Truth-be-told, I’ve always held COB’s contemporaries (ETERNAL TEARS OF SORROW, SKYFIRE, NORTHER, etc.), in higher regard.

With all that in mind, I was in no hurry to get my hands on COB’s newest release, “Are You Dead Yet?” Then I read in a few different places that the instrumental winky puller had been toned down a bit and vocalist Alexi Laiho was a bit easier to understand. This news intrigued me, as Janne Warman’s overblown keyboard runs and Alexi’s garbled-beyond-comprehension vocals had always been my biggest peeve when it came to COB’s albums. So I thought, “what the hell,” and went ahead and picked-up “Are You Dead Yet?”

First things first, this is still CHILDREN OF BODOM, 100%. There are still keyboard runs and solos, just not quite as many. Warman’s keyboards have taken a slightly more backing role this time around. Laiho’s vocals are still garbled, but he seems to be making an effort to be a bit more understandable. The guitar work from Laiho and new axeman Roope Latvala (ex-Sinergy, among several others) is great, as usual on a COB release. Although, there aren’t as many leads or solos as on past releases. Bass player Henkka T. Blacksmith has taken a more prominent role on “Are You Dead Yet?”, standing out more than in the past. And Jaska W. Raatikainen’s drumming is good, as always. Regardless of one’s opinion of COB’s music, their instrumental skills are inarguable.

On “Are You Dead Yet?”, CHILDREN OF BODOM has finally written a full album of songs, not just four-minute vehicles for solos, held together by loose verses and choruses. I’d always kind of thought of COB as nothing more than a means for Laiho and Warmen to show off and they did so unabashedly. While this was always impressive, the songs always suffered. Not anymore.

“Living Dead Beat” starts with keyboard melody and is soon joined by the rest of the band with crunchy, rhythmic beat. This album sees a lot more of the chugging rhythmic-style guitar playing, which might scare many away. But fear not, at the 3:15 mark the first guitar solo rips-in and all is well. “Are You Dead Yet” speeds things up just a bit in the beginning, but settles into a groove after a short time. With a very catchy chorus, this is one of my favourite tracks. “If You Want Peace…Prepare For War” is and absolute stomper, very bass heavy and the heaviest song on the album. “In Your Face” is my personal favorite, as it has a pissed of swagger to it that makes me want to pump my fist in the air. “Trashed, Lost & Strungout” is the albums first single and sounds like a song from COB’s last release, “Hate Crew Deathroll”. To finish off my copy (the USA version), is a cover of the RAMONES’ classic, “Somebody Put Something In My Drink.” COB adds its own twist, but never loses the spirit of the original, making for some great fun.

Now for the downside of “Are You Dead Yet?” Some of the songs (“Punch Me I Bleed” and “Bastards Of Bodom”), aren’t quite on the same level as the others. I’ve also read at various forums that a whole lot of people dislike the production, but I think it sounds very good. Mikko Karmila, who has worked with the likes of STRATOVARIUS, SONATA ARCTICA, THERION and LULLACRY in the past, handled the production duties. All the instruments are clear, full and heavy. So, you may or may not be happy with the production value on “Are You Dead Yet?”

So, the final verdict on “Are You Dead Yet?” I like it. No, I really like it. It probably won’t end up in my year-end top 10 list, but it’s very good nonetheless. And to top it all off, “Are You Dead Yet?” is my now my favorite CHILDREN OF BODOM album.
